About Therapy
Slowing Down Is the Part You Dread Most
Everything in your life right now is telling you to keep moving, stay productive, and think your way through the pain.
So you’ve kept moving. The pain has kept its seat right where it was.
You know something has to change, and the part of you that knows it also knows what changing would ask of you. Slowing down long enough to feel any of this is uncomfortable, and on some days it’s frightening.
The thought underneath the resistance runs something like this: “If I stop, I’m not sure I’ll get going again.”
I understand how hard that is. This work asks for the opposite of what the rest of your life asks for. It wants you to pause, listen, and come back into your body at a pace you can stand.
When you do slow down, you start to notice what’s been waiting on your attention, and you can meet it with curiosity and give grace to whatever shows up.
Working With Me Will Feel a Little Wonky at Times
Taking time to find your breath, holding space for yourself, moving your body around the room, and yes, encountering horses. All of it belongs to the plan that gets you out of that corner.
I won’t hurry you along, and there’s nothing you need to have sorted out before you walk in.
There’s no timeline, just opportunity.
The opportunity is to understand what you’ve been through, at a pace that leaves you room to give yourself the grace you need.
Your Story Lives in More Than Your Memory
We’ll pay attention to the story of what happened to you. Just as much attention goes to how that story is still living in your body, your relationships, and your nervous system.
Mindfulness is one of the two ways I work. It builds your ability to notice a thought, a feeling, or a sensation without judging it or bolting from it.
Horses are the other. They live entirely in the present, they respond honestly to whatever stands in front of them, and they’re very good at showing you a pattern you can’t see from inside of it.
All of it builds toward the same place. You’ll be able to hold what you lost alongside a life that still feels worth having.
About Patti Schlough
Patti Schlough, LPC (Pennsylvania), LCPC (Maryland)
What the Travelers Have Taught Me
For decades now I’ve traveled alongside people whose lives were totally upended by a significant loss or trauma.
Every journey was unique and at times difficult. What made all the difference was the willingness of the traveler to seek, to lean into the pain, and to learn to breathe again.
None of it was easy, and I’ll tell you that honestly before we ever begin.
Everything I Bring Into the Room With You
My Master’s degree came in 1992, and a post-graduate certificate in Spiritual and Existential Counseling from Johns Hopkins followed in 2004.
That same year I certified as a practitioner of the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model, and earned Advanced certification in 2011.
Today I serve EAGALA as a Mentor and Trainer, teaching and mentoring other equine practitioners internationally.
I’m also a Certified Mindful Educator through Mindful Schools, licensed as an LPC in Pennsylvania and an LCPC in Maryland.
Your Sessions Happen Where I Live
The farm on Bahns Mill Road is my home. The horses you meet are the ones I feed in the morning.
When you drive out here, you’re coming into that. Everything I do happens in person on this ground, with people who make the trip from across Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Finding your way out of the darkest corner of your life can feel lonely and frightening. When there’s a light to focus on, or a line to grab onto, the way starts to clear.
